Waiting for Leo XIV to Act as Pope
After the publication of our article on August 4, 2025, “The Pontificate of Leo XIV, a Transitional Stage?”[1], a friend from Italy, Brother Étienne-Marie, shared with us his own article from June 3, 2025, “Pope Prevost and the False Dilemma”[2]. He highlights, in terms of the disagreement between those who are hopeful about the recovery of the Church and those who, on the contrary, invite us to wait-and-see, between the “confident” and the “disenchanted,” what Catholics fundamentally expect from a pope: that he be the living organ of the regula fidei:
“Whether confident or disenchanted, let us pray for an authentic intellectual conversion of Pope Leo XIV. Not so much, in reality, that he may achieve partial successes, even if they are desirable, that he may “set processes in motion,” or that he may make broader concessions on the very meager objectives that we hold dear: for any objective, once detached from the profession of the integral Faith, is a very mediocre objective indeed. Let us pray rather that the sources of his thought, and of the thought of the Church, both those charged with teaching and those who are to be taught, which emanates from him as from a living regula fidei, may once again become crystal clear and error-free. The work of restoration that only then will Pope Leo be able to truly implement will certainly be completed by others, but such work will have the hope of succeeding because it will have begun at the sources, and not in the stagnant and complex channels of the delta.
In this supernatural perspective, as the reader has certainly guessed, even the alternative between the confident and the disenchanted turns out to be a false dilemma to be overcome. As much as reality suggests disenchantment, faith in the Providence that assists the Church ‒ and no reason inferior to this ‒ invites us to be confident.”
